Martin Scorsese

Striding atop modern filmmakers like a colossus, Scorsese has radically energized regular Hollywood genres to craft some of the finest films in history. His active camera has transformed biopics, gangster flicks, and musicals into art forms. He may never win an Oscar (until the Academy inevitably presents him with a lifetime achievement award) because he's far too creative to settle for standard fare. His unforgettable characters struggle to come to terms with Life and remain inscribed our memory.

Notable Films
Departed, The (2006)
Scorsese returns to crime noir in this reworking of the Hong Kong drama, Infernal Affairs. Well acted and scripted, this ranks among his best work.
Kundun (1997)
Reverential film traces the life of the 14th Dalai Lama from his early years to his forced exile from Tibet. Historical film that provides glimpses into Tibetan culture.
No Direction Home: Bob Dylan (2005)
Long a music afficianado, Scorsese has artistically filmed The Band in Concert previously, and now provides the definitive documentary on Dylan.
Goodfellas (1991)
This is the film Scorsese was born to make. No one could have captured the terrain of the mob more accurately or more artistically ...
Aviator, The (2004)
A project that Leonardo DiCaprio developed a passion for. He convinced Scorsese to take on the life of Howard Hughes and his American dream.
Last Temptation of Christ, The (1988)
Scorsese has long been keenly interested in spiritual matters and might have pursued the priesthood had he not fallen in love with filmmaking. He reaches the masses here.
Gangs of New York (2002)
Epic historical drama about Irish immigrants settling the Five Points area of Manhattan and fighting for their freedom.
Raging Bull (1980)
A project that Robert Di Nero passionately wanted to bring to the screen, he convinced Scorsese to craft a biopic about Jake LaMotta, which ranks as the finest boxing themed film of all time.
Bringing Out the Dead (1999)
Containing enough prostitutes and transgendered people to signal an Almodovar film, this poignant drama brought American exposure.
Taxi Driver (1976)
A classic--a haunting character study that requires multiple viewing. Travis Bickel ranks among the most compelling alienated psychotic personas in film history.
