Robert Altman

Among the "New Wave" of auteurs that came into prominence in the 1970s, Altman was the "outsider" who remained true to his rebellious artistic vision. No director ever loved making movies as much as the "old man" and no director ever enjoyed working with actors and his film crew as much. Although nominated for five Oscars, he never won a regular contest--finally receiving a lifetime award at his final ceremony.
